space hipsters vs jubala squid-lizard

July 29th, 2008

i just saw this video on current tv and thought id share. if you havent seen current, you should check it out.

call me arrogant, but if jubala’s pet alien space squid-lizard was represented in that cartoon it could kick the crap out of steve aoki’s battleship and all of them space hipsters. seriously.

ALSO while im here…. ive been thinking quite a bit and have been noticing that all the electo kids get to share and find their music on blogs, but what about those of us who enjoy live instruments and a solid song structure from time to time?  its time (for me, anyway) to make a stand on this issue.  here’s a couple delightful songs for your ears on this lovely tuesday evening… they’re not really new (or hip ;) ) persay, but i think many people might have overlooked them in the past few years. if you have any tracks that you think other people that like you might like, send them or the name to lizard@jubala.com

fields - song for the fields

dredg - same lo road

see you soon.  thanks for stopping by, eh?

fast-forward!

July 25th, 2008

well? whoa. these last 7 weeks have definitely revealed to us why most bands don’t record an album in 7 weeks. but wow do we have some tracks in-store for you! tons of new songs as well as the classics with full-blown reworking.

we just relocated engineer-master ben back at his home in tuscon to finish up the tracks and here i sit in the oh-so-lonely studio and thought id post something to at least partially reflect the vast amounts of energy that everyone put into these recordings. with most of the equipment gone, all that i could find were some of the sheets of notes that hadn’t been thrown away yet and such and thought they looked pretty sweet.

ben’s notes for guitar tones on shades… there are A LOT of guitars :)

we’ve put our “bengineer” to work this summer. without his skills (which extend far, far beyond building preamps if you haven’t realized), we would not have been able to do any of this. we are endlessly grateful and are happy to announce that mr. ben reed is going to be a producer of the album. we can’t wait to hear what his mixing and production wizardry does to these tracks and we’ll be sure to give a sneak-peak as soon as we get one…

until next time, all the best on your journeys and we’ll see you all in the fall.

In-Studio Rehearsal

June 16th, 2008

here’s a glimpse from the studio (courtesy of the lovely kim hidalgo) of the band rehearsing one of the new songs for the album…

Who?

June 7th, 2008

Last night Jubala played at the Nueva School in Hillsborough, California. It was a beautiful evening of music and happens to be the place where Chris and Trevor first came together to play music when they were eight years old. Thing always seem to come full circle, eh?

So, thank you to all of those who were there. We’re glad you came, so thanks. You may be wondering who this band is and where we came from and honestly sometimes we wonder the same thing. Here’s the best we’ve come up with so far:

bridgerunning.jpg

jubala is…

soulful and melodic. ambitious and intricate. stripped and sensitive. jubala makes music.

with borderline obsessive attention to detail, sam (vocals), chris (guitar), zack (bass) and new members trevor (keys) and derek (drums) at last stand poised to quench your auditory appetite with their weapons of sonic expression.

arising from the mysterious forests of half moon bay, jubala first appeared during the spring of 2000 with a few of chris’s flowing guitar riffs and long nights of pre-halo era battle. six years departed, not much has changed. members and friendships reinvented, college educations, and countless quest-filled nights later, jubala has reemerged with a reservoir of music to share and a new action-packed lineup to enjoy.

jubala is here. stay close to be part of the creation of jubala’s inaugural recordings.

Stay tuned this weekend for the first of an installment of updates on the album recording process taking place this summer in Half Moon Bay. We’re one week in and minus a few minor challenges, things are sounding great.

Thanks again to all of you and hope to see you soon.

PS - no recordings from last night but here’s a similar recording to the set last night available for stream and download.

have you heard as tall as lions? if not, you’re silly. check it out yo.

A couple saucy jams to pass the time..

April 11th, 2008

mushroom-cloud1.jpg

This first one is from a couple clever emcees with a solid rhythm section called the Flobots. When I heard it on the radio I did a double-take.. by the end you might as well.

The next saucy installment is something of an anthem for us here at 22nd st. Shout out to Big Matthew for his creativity and versatility. Open the link and click on 22nd Street in the bottom right.. feel free to avail yourself of the rest of his sonic arsenal as well, it’s as diverse as they come.www.selfportrait.net/matthewscieplak
